about chris
Chris Dieman is a composer and performer whose multidisciplinary skills have brought him into different sectors of the musical theatre world. As a child, he began playing piano at age six and attended the music school of the Rhode Island Philharmonic, focusing on music theory and jazz piano. He spent his undergraduate years at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts studying musical theatre under Broadway legends like Michael Potts and Jeanne Lehman, and legendary clowning instructor Jim Calder, and Grotowski disciple Andre Baer.
After graduating NYU, he has found his way into several lasting professional partnerships, notably as music associate of legendary composer John Kander (CABARET, CHICAGO, SCOTTSBORO BOYS). Chris helped Kander and his new writing partner Greg Pierce usher two of their world premieres, THE LANDING (Vineyard Theatre, starring David Hyde Pierce and Julia Murney), and KID VICTORY (Signature Theatre, Washington DC), to the stage. Last season saw Dieman collaborate with Kander on the world premiere of the Tony award-winning new musical NEW YORK, NEW YORK (St. James Theatre). Dieman’s role alongside Kander has influenced his artistry immensely, both in the sound of his compositions, as well as his performance style.
His work as a composer includes his one-man shows PETER & THE PIANO, PRINCE OF DENMARK, the full-length musicals WAR! and PROHIBITED LOVE, and DONE DANCING, a suite for piano and dance. Dieman most recently has begun scoring for film, including CROW GOD (Selection, Nighthawk film festival), DOLLAR GENERALS and ONLY WORN ONCE starring Martha Kelly.
Dieman’s portfolio for musical work makes him an up-and-coming major player in the musical theatre world.
As a performer, his theater credits include Stravinsky’s THE SOLDIER’S TALE (Newport Music Festival), THE SMART SET (Cornerstone Playhouse), AS I LAY DYING (BRIC), DICK ON DICK (Bowery Poetry), THE CHERRY ORCHARD (14th Street Theater), and workshops with Abrons Arts Center, Guild Hall, and New York Theater Workshop. TV credits include BLUE BLOODS (CBS) and MUHAMMAD ALI’S GREATEST FIGHT (HBO). He also served as co-producer on the New York Times Critic’s Pick LYPSINKA! THE TRILOGY. In addition, Dieman was a member of the New York City Artist Corps during the coronavirus pandemic.
Chris was appointed Artistic Director of New Music Theatre Project in 2020, where he spearheads the company’s mission to develop new works of music and theatre.
Dieman resides in Long Island City, Queens.
